Text: Romans 1:16-17, Hebrews 11:1-6
Inside and outside the church, “faith” is given praise. Nike, Disney, Apple, Walmart; each of them talk about the importance of faith. Unlike the other solas, faith has a secular standing.
During the Reformation the truth that faith in Christ’s work (not the works of our faith) save us was known by the Latin epithet Sola Fide. For that little Latin saying, many people lost their lives. Yet throughout the Bible, faith has been just as powerful and just as dangerous. So what is faith? What does it accomplish? Why is it so important to God that we guard it?
Faith in Romans:
v. 16 The gospel found in Scripture is the power of God unto salvation when it is joined to faith.
v. 17 Scriptures old and new tell us that saints have a right standing before God because they have faith in God.
Faith in Hebrews:
v. 1 Faith is the evidence of God’s promises. What is evidence? It is proof, before a jury, of what is being said. That is faith: Confidence in the testimony.
v. 6 It is impossible to please God without having faith in him, and having faith that he wants to reward you.
The Life of John Knox is a prime example of a man who lived in faith defending the truth of sola fide. It is a life of incredible fearlessness. How do we live with such courage? The answer is in one sentence, but we’ll take that sentence in parts:
Faith is ______________________________. “For God so Loved the word, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish” John 3:16. It matters where we put our faith.
Faith is ______________________________. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourself: it is the gift of God” Ephesians 4:12. It matters that faith is not earned, but received.
Faith is ______________________________. “Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifies. Who is he that condemneth.” Romans 8:33 The question is real. Consider who does the justifying.
Faith is _____________not ______________. “The fear of man brings a snare” Proverbs 29:25. Few things do we enslave ourselves to more promptly than to the opinions of others. But faith brings fearlessness.
