Title: Sola Scriptura
How does God communicate with us? Jesus told us that after his departure, this was the work of the Spirit Jn 14:26. So we want inspired leading - inspired means “the Spirit’s in it.” Over the centuries men have named many things as seats of inspiration: Leaders, institutions, reasons, feelings. Yet the Apostles deliver to us the seat of inspiration: Scripture. 2 Ti 3:16
During the Reformation this idea was known by the Latin epithet Sola Scriptura. This year is the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. For the following five Sundays we will study and celebrate different teachings from the Reformation, starting here.
v. 13 How is a soul saved? Paul’s answer is this; by calling on the name of the Lord.
v. 14 Then Paul traces a path from salvation back to a source. Salvation comes from a mouth calling, which comes from a heart believing, which comes from an ear hearing, which comes from a preacher speaking.
v. 15 This preacher must be sent. The great commission is specifically in view, ordination is symbolic in view.
v. 16 Yet even ordained preachers are as powerless at overcoming unbelief as anointed prophets.
v. 17 But Paul locates a source, and a power even higher up the path than the preacher: the Word of God. It is this source which has the ability to give “hearing.”
If hearing the word is the power of salvation to all who believe, then let’s take a look at five graces scripture gives the church...
Scripture is ___________________________. “We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed” 2 Pe 1:19. Loving what you hear and read is how you make sure to “take heed.”
Scripture leads us in ____________________. “For the word of God is ... a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” He 4:12. Not only does it convict us in our sins, it also comforts us with its hope.
Scripture __________________________ us. “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” Jn 17:17 The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to make you more of the Son of God. His speaking changes things.
Scripture is ___________________________. 2 Co 3:14-18 is speaking of the Word read in Church when it says, “we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same”
Scripture is our ________________________. “Teach all nations...teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” Ma 28:19 Our job is to teach, AND to learn together. We are in His school.
